Client:
Novo Nordisk needed a way to collect and manage clinical trial recruitment data for its growing number of clinical trials.
Previous systems were varied and localised, which resulted in a large overhead and user frustration when trying to manage, and interpret the data.
They needed a platform that could not only handle large amounts of data, but that was also scalable and future proof as they would continue to grow the volume of their trials. They also needed to be able to export reports on the data to share with senior stakeholders and decision makers.
As a global company they also needed a system that would allow multiple admin users in different locations to access the same database, whilst only surfacing the information appropriate to their respective roles. This would allow for seamless workflows and sharing of information within the business.
Together with Novo Nordisk we analysed evidence from trial recruiters working in clinical settings with limited time, and designed a solution focused on the needs of these users: The platform we built is intuitive to use and easy to navigate around, allowing the admins to quickly and easily add patients to trials with a minimal number of clicks to complete their workflows.
We included different user levels and permissions meaning admins in different roles could all access the system and carry out the workflows they needed without seeing inappropriate or unnecessary information. The specific domain security we included ensured the data is filtered correctly and is visible only by the correct subset of users.
We made the app responsive, so it was designed to be used either on portable tablets in clinical settings, or to export reports on laptops or desktop computers in offices.
We also exposed an external API to Novo Nordisk, which gave them flexibility in managing users, trials and sites on the system, rather than the control of that data sitting fully with DabApps. We did this by providing a token to Novo Nordisk that allowed them to authenticate any request to an external facing endpoint.
And as always, data security was also key – As with all of our projects we took steps to ensure operational and framework security such as ensuring character sets are encoded and using session authentication.
Using the new platform makes managing clinical trial recruitment smoother and more efficient for Novo Nordisk. They grew from 5,000 potential trial participants recorded on the platform in 2020, to nearly 30,000 in 2024.
With a secure, token-authenticated API, we allowed Novo Nordisk to share access to, and also manage, the data collected via the platform, giving them flexibility and ownership over it; they can easily export data customised to specific trials, sites and users. We’ve also future proofed the app, allowing them to scale their trials as needed, with confidence that their platform will support this.
Novo Nordisk continues to go from strength to strength and we remain in ongoing conversations about new features they’re interested in adding to their platform. We’re looking forward to further exciting opportunities with them as they continue to grow their suite of products.
