The Gambling Therapy mobile app provides multi-lingual support to users affected by problem gambling, offering practical advice, audio exercises and live chat.

Defining the problem

We spent time getting to know the client’s existing systems and the staff who offer support. For the first development phase, we focused on a ‘Minimum Viable Product’ which would be available to users but would also be used by Gambling Therapy to secure further funding for enhancements to the app.Technically, it made sense to develop the app using React Native. We also built a backend to give Gambling Therapy some control over content and allow them to view results from their short quiz, designed to determine whether a user might be a problem gambler.

Working together

We were tasked with designing and building a mobile app which offers advice and support to those affected by problem gambling. Gambling Therapy thought it likely that users would have concerns around anonymity so wanted to offer them a good level of interaction and engagement without requiring them to register and login to use the app. The app needed to be available on both Android and iOS and the initial version of the app would be used to secure further funding for the charity.

The outcome

The first version of the app was released in October 2016 and a new version, offering multilingual support, will be released soon.
