The challenge
To build a mobile application allowing patients to continue and enhance the valuable work they do in clinical sessions at the Voices clinic. The application needed to be available to patients for download from the App Store and Google play.
How we solved the problem
We worked closely with the client research team to understand exactly what they wanted to achieve, the characteristics of the target patient group and the data that needed to be captured within the app. We then created wireframes and designs to demonstrate the workflow.
The Choices App was developed using Ionic and Angular JS development frameworks, based on Apache Cordova to build a hybrid app that can be used on both iPhones and Android phones. User accounts are managed through a secure admin interface built using Django.
The outcome
The Choices App is now being used regularly by patients attending the Voices Clinic. They can now access a range of features in the palm of their hand, whenever and wherever they need them. Features include personalised coping strategies, mindfulness meditations, assertiveness aids and mood tracking with daily push notifications.

"Our shared vision for the health service of the future, as also described by the National Information Board, is an NHS characterised by digital tools benefiting and empowering patients and clinicians alike. Innovation will play a large part in this vision being realised.
Innovative digital technologies are playing an important part in empowering patients to manage their own health at their convenience, and programmes like the Promoting Health Apps and Widening Digital Participation are helping these innovations to reach more people."
