Questions about React and React Native development
What is the difference between React and React Native?
React is a library for building interfaces, including web applications that run in a browser. React Native uses the same component-based approach to build mobile apps with native interface components. DabApps uses React for web products and React Native for iOS and Android apps, choosing the approach around how people need to use the product.
Can we share code across web, iOS and Android?
React Native lets iOS and Android apps share much of their code, with platform-specific work where needed. A React web app and a React Native mobile app can use the same APIs and may share some application logic, but their interfaces need to suit different screens and interactions. We assess the opportunities for reuse before agreeing the build.
Can you take over an existing React or React Native app?
Yes. We start with a review of the code, dependencies, tests, APIs and release process. That gives us a basis for recommending targeted improvements or a larger rebuild. We also work on migrations from older technology: for Sussex Voices Clinic, we replaced a Cordova app with React Native and TypeScript.
Can you work with our existing backend?
Yes. We assess the APIs, authentication and data the interface needs, then agree any backend changes with your team. We can also build or extend the API ourselves. Our React work includes Django-backed products such as Agilio iComply and WeThrive, while STEAMS-ED uses React Native with Firebase.
What affects the cost and timescale?
The main factors are the user journeys, number of platforms, interface complexity, integrations and condition of any existing code. Device features, data storage and app store releases also affect mobile work. We use an initial conversation and, where needed, a technical review to define a useful scope and delivery plan before estimating the build.
Can you help with app store releases and ongoing support?
Yes. We can support submission to the Apple and Google app stores, as we did for STEAMS-ED, and plan maintenance and further development after launch. That includes reviewing framework and dependency updates and checking changes against supported browsers or devices. Release responsibilities and support arrangements are agreed as part of the engagement.
